  • The disaster made the local community into one team.
  • -> The disaster brought the community together. 
    • bring together : ~을 긁어모으다; 묶다, 합치다.
      • Brokers bring together buyers and sellers.
• 나는 최근 산악자전거를 타기 시작했다.
  • I recently started to ride a mountain bike. 
  • -> I recently took up mountain-biking.
    • take something up : (특히 재미로) ~을 배우다 (시작하다)
      • When did you take up photography?
• 왜 이런 일들을 가만히 당하고만 계십니까?
  • Why do you endure these matters?
  • -> Why do you put up with these matters?
    • put up with : 참다, 참고 견디다. (=endure, stand, tolerate)
• 밀린 일이 많이 있다.
  • A lot of delayed work remains.
  • -> I have a lot of work to catch up on.
    • 이 문형 자체가 자주 쓰임. 누군가를 따라 잡다. 
    • work : 일, 직업 / After a long vacation, I have many work to do. (works가 아님)
    • works : (작가의) 글; 공장; 작업물 / The works of C.S. Lewis are abounding.
    • catch up on : ~을 따라잡다.
      • Need to go to work early tomorrow morning to catch up on all the work that piled up while I was gone.
• 그는 그 소식을 듣고 크게 화를 냈다.
  • He became angry after he heard that news.
  • -> He blew up when he heard that news.
    • 화를 내다
      • get[become] angry
      • lose one's temper
      • blow up (at)
      • be [get] mad (at)
• 이 셔츠가 바로 눈에 들어왔다.
  • These shirts directly got into my eyes.
  • -> This shirt caught my eye immediately.
    • catch somebody's eye : ~의 눈길을 붙잡다. 시선을 끌다.
      • Can you catch the waiter's eye?
    • shirt : 셔츠
      • to wear a shirt and tie
• 위원회의 결정은 노사관계에 나쁜 선례를 남기게 될 것이다.
  • The decision by the committee will remain a bad example about the labor-company relationship.
  • -> The decision by the committee will set a bad example for the labor relations.
    • set a bad example / set a bad precedent : 나쁜 선례를 만들다.
    • 노사관계 : the labor-management relations (company가 아님) 그냥 labor relations 라고도 씀.
      • establish sound labor relations. 바람직한 노사 관계를 정립하다.
• 나는 용기를 내서 그에게 전화를 했다.
  • I called him with courage.
  • -> I found the courage to call him.
  • -> I summon up the courage to call him.
    • 용기를 내다 : be courageous = have courage = summon up one's courage
      • As a child, he was courageous and stood up to the bullies in his class.
• 사용후에는 곧바로 병마개를 닫아주세요.
  • Close a cork immediately after using it.
  • -> Put the cap back on the bottle as soon as you have used it.
    • put something back : ~을 다시 제자리에 갖다 놓다.
• 나는 강아지에게 목줄을 달고 산책하러 밖으로 데리고 나갔다.
  • I took my puppy out for a walk with the leash.
  • -> I put the leash on my dog and took her out for a walk.
    • leash : (개 따위를 매어두는) 가죽끈, 밧줄
      • All dogs must be kept on a leash in public places.
    • keep a dog on a leash : 가죽끈으로 매어두다.
